Maji Moto Hot Springs
Chemka hot spring, also known as Kikuletwa springs is a perfect place to visit after your safari adventure.
The hot spring of Kikuletwa, also known as Chemka Hot Springs, is close to the village of Rundugai and is one of the most beautiful places to relax in Tanzania. The small pool crystal clear, turquoise water is surrounded by palm and fig trees with winding roots. Although, it is called “hot springs”, the water in Kikuletwa is not truly ‘hot’ but refreshing, as the water source flows underground from Kilimanjaro. The groundwater actively interacts with geothermal sources, forming a number of small lakes with warm, never-stagnating water. Garra Rufa fish live in the water of the spring. These sly little fish are used by pedicures around the world. These fish suck and nibble on the skin and remove delicate skin through natural peeling. So, you will show up with shiny, revitalized feet.
Chemka means boiling, referring to the way the water appears to boil as it emerges from underground. In fact, the water is not hot rather it is a pleasant warm temperature! The springs’ water is from Mountain, Kilimanjaro.
This is an oasis amidst the Tanzanian savannah. It offers captivating, Bounty-styled views, crystal-clean water and dense vegetation around. Chemka springs is the only place in Tanzania (and most likely in the whole East Africa), where the groundwater actively interacted with geothermal sources, forming a number of small lakes with warm non stagnating water.
The spring is over 6 m deep in some places although you can see the bottom through the crystal clear waters no matter where you are.
It is a great place for swimming or picnic.
Hidden away in the village of Rundugai is a hot spring, just an hour outside of Moshi. At Maji Moto, you can enjoy swimming in the beautiful clear water and explore the surrounding area. You can take a day to go to the hot springs for a chance to have a picnic, go swimming, and relax. If you have more time, go ahead and camp for the night and enjoy a barbeque under the stars.
