‘Siringit’ a Maasai word standing for the endless plains is where the word Serengeti was derived from. Serengeti Ecosystem cover more than 30,000 square Kilometres including Serengeti National Park proper, Maswa Game Reserve, Grumeti, Loliondo and Ikorongo Game Controlled Area.
Serengeti National Park is one of the three UNESCO Seven Wonders of the World found in Tanzania. (The other 2 are Ngorongoro Crater and Mt. Kilimanjaro).
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is famously known as the Garden of Eden due to its stupendous natural beauty. . The area consists of various landscapes and includes dense mountain forests, woodlands, grasslands, lakes and swamps. Some of the most important archeological sites in the world, such as Oldupai Gorge and Laetoli can be found in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Archeologists found evidence showing that the area was occupied by hominids over 3 million years ago and thus claiming that it could be the birthplace of mankind.
Dry savannah landscapes, baobab forests, and elephant herds are all part of the splendor of the Tarangire National Park. This park is a quiet, wooded savannah, where a rich variety of thriving fauna - including tree-climbing lions - can be spotted from open vehicles. Add African bush elephants, plains zebras, Masai giraffes, impalas, blue wildebeest, buffaloes, bush pigs, common elands, common waterbucks, and Tarangire is a quadruped-rich environment. Birds can also be found on many of the wetter banks of the Tarangire River. Keep an eye out for brilliantly-colored parakeets known as lovebirds. In the north of Tarangire National Park, the majestic baobab trees are among the finest examples of this species anywhere.
A large lake that is home to exceptional wildlife, thousands of birds, and a primary forest. The Lake Manyara National Park encompasses the northern half of the lake and its western shore, which ends a few miles from the escarpment. The distant sight of flocks of birds on the hazy horizon is unforgettable. Herons, egrets, ospreys, ibis, pelicans, jacanas, and plovers are just some of the 380 species recorded. Lush vegetation greets visitors as they enter the park, where towering trees take advantage of the rich volcanic soil and porous rocks help underground streams reach the roots. Those lucky enough might even see baboons gathered in troops of between 30 and 100. The park is also home to impalas, giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras.
A green jewel and home to the fourth highest mountain in Africa –Mount Meru (4,566 m). Anyone visiting this park will be thrilled by the breathtaking landscapes ranging from the Meru Crater in the west, the Ngurdoto Crater in the south-east to the grasslands and of course the alkaline Momella lakes in the north-east.
The landscapes in Mikumi National Park can easily be compared to those of the Serengeti National Park as acacias, baobabs and tamarinds dot the savannah. The Ruhebo and Uluguru mountains as well as some interesting rock formations can be seen close to the northern boundary of the park and the Mkata plains are by far the best place for game viewing. The park is famous for its healthy populations of elephants and buffaloes which can easily be spotted out on the plains. The tamarind trees are a favourite spot for elephants and giraffes who spend hours eating the fruits.
